Michel Bellen, known as the Linkeroever Strangler, was a notorious Belgian murderer and the first serial killer recorded in Flanders. He committed his first rape in 1964 and went on to murder three women, including nurses, between 1964 and 1966. Initially sentenced to death, his punishment was converted to life imprisonment, but he was released on parole in 1982. After killing again in 1984, he was imprisoned until his death from heart failure in a psychiatric institution in Bierbeek on June 10, 2020.
