Michel Kayoya was a Burundian priest, poet, and philosopher born in Kibumbu, Burundi, on December 8, 1934. After his primary education, he entered seminary and later studied theology in Belgium. He was ordained a priest in 1963, became a parish vicar, and founded the Buyogoma Cultural Center. Kayoya worked on various pastoral initiatives and faced opposition due to his efforts, which led to the bishop removing him from his posts in 1972. That year, during events leading to a genocide against the Hutu, he was arrested and ultimately executed on May 15, 1972.
