Michael Willem Maria (Michel) van Winkel was a Dutch priest and politician born on May 25, 1923, in Rotterdam. He joined the Benedictines with St. Paul Abbey and worked on the construction of Slangenburg Abbey. Van Winkel served as a pastor in Persia from 1958 to 1961 and as a navy chaplain until 1973, when political conflicts led to his retirement. Elected to the Dutch parliament in 1975 as a member of the PPR, he focused on social affairs, defense, and animal welfare legislation.
