She studied in the United Kingdom and the United States and became the first nurse to obtain a doctorate on the European mainland in 1980. Grypdonck held professorships in Ghent, Leuven, and Utrecht and retired on October 1, 2009. Her expertise significantly contributed to nursing being recognized as a legitimate scientific field at various Flemish and Dutch universities.
