His works have been translated into several languages, making him a prominent voice in contemporary Cuban literature. He received accolades, including the David Prize in 1977 and the Order of Merit from Italy in 2012, recognizing his contributions to Cuban and Italian culture. Mejides passed away on June 13, 2018, due to cancer.
