Mike Portnoy is an American drummer born on April 20, 1967, in Long Beach, New York. He is best known as the drummer and co-founder of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. Renowned for his technical skills, Portnoy has won 23 awards from Modern Drummer magazine. He co-produced six of Dream Theater's albums alongside guitarist John Petrucci, starting with 'Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.' In 2010, he left Dream Theater due to differences in interests and later joined Avenged Sevenfold to record their album 'Nightmare.'
