Mikhail Ivanovich Karpov, born April 24, 1944, in Murmansk, is a physicist and a Doctor of Technical Sciences. He is a professor and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR and currently heads the materials science laboratory at the Institute for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
