Dimić began his academic career at the Institute for Experimental Phonetics of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and taught literary theory at the University of Belgrade until 1962. He studied comparative literature at the University of Tübingen from 1963. Dimić moved to Canada in 1966 and became a professor at the University of Alberta, contributing significantly to the field and founding several literary institutions.
