He served during the conflict in Slovenia and was stationed at Pleso Airport in Zagreb. On June 27, 1991, his Mi-8 transport helicopter was shot down by Slovenian Territorial Defense forces, resulting in his death along with two other crew members. The circumstances surrounding his death caused controversy, including the refusal to return his body for some time and reports of triumphal displays by Slovenian officials with the deceased.
