He achieved notable success in athletics, winning a bronze medal in the 4x100 meter relay at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan. De Castro also participated in the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow, where he finished in eighth place in the 4x100 meter relay while competing in the 100 meters event but did not progress past the heats. His personal best in the 100 meters is 10.43 seconds, achieved on September 8, 1979, in Mexico City.
