Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, he formerly served as a jet fighter pilot before joining NASA in 1959. Promoted to flight director during the Apollo program, he directed missions including Apollo 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, and all Skylab missions. Post-Apollo, he worked on the Space Shuttle Project Office focusing on Remote Manipulator Systems Operations until 1978.
