She served as the chairperson of the Centre Democrats and was a member of the Danish Parliament from 1977 to 2001. Despite facing health challenges, including a six-month sick leave due to a tick bite that caused facial paralysis, she continued her political career. Jakobsen has been married three times and is a mother of two sons. She became a Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1984.
