Renowned in his field, he is acknowledged for creating the KEGG bioinformatics database. In 2018, he was listed among the Clarivate Citation Laureates for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contributions to bioinformatics, particularly for developing the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG).
