Mitsuhashi Susumu was a Japanese microbiologist and biochemist, born on October 26, 1917, in Chiba Prefecture. He is renowned for his research on antibiotic resistance in bacteria and their transmissibility through gene (plasmid) exchange. Mitsuhashi independently discovered transferable resistance to various antibiotics in bacteria in 1960, notably in Salmonella and later E. coli. He coined the term resistance factors or R-factors, which are now identified with plasmids. In recognition of his work, he received the Paul-Ehrlich und Ludwig-Darmstaedter Prize in 1981.
