Mitsuru Yoshida was a Japanese author and naval officer born in Tokyo on January 6, 1923. He is best known for his book 'Senkan Yamato-no Saigo' (Requiem for Battleship Yamato), which draws from his experiences as a junior officer aboard the battleship Yamato during its final voyage. Yoshida was a survivor of the ship when it sank on April 7, 1945, during Operation Ten-Go. His work was adapted into a film in 1953, and the story continued to inspire sequels, such as the 2005 movie 'Yamato'. He passed away on September 17, 1979.
