He founded Celtel, a mobile phone company with operations in about 15 African countries and investments totaling $750 million, which he sold in 2005 for $3.4 billion. In 2005, he established the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to promote good governance in Africa, offering an annual prize of $5 million to recognize an African leader for their efforts in governance, security, health, education, and economic development. He has received various academic degrees and was recognized by Forbes in 2013.
