Modesta Lavana Pérez (1929-2010) was an indigenous Nahua healer and activist from Hueyapan, Morelos, Mexico. Notable for her activism in indigenous and women's rights, she served as a healer and legal translator of Nahuatl. Renowned for her knowledge in ethnobotany and the use of the temazcal sweat bath, she also gained recognition for her traditional wool weavings. Despite challenges, including punishment for speaking Nahuatl in school, she became a translator, enabling her community to better navigate legal systems. She co-authored a study on the folk illness susto, contributing significantly to its literature.
