Mohamed Farrah Aidid was a Somali military officer and diplomat born on December 15, 1934. Educated in Rome and Moscow, he served as a police leader under Italian colonial rule and became a major in the Somali National Army. He led efforts to overthrow President Siad Barre during the Somali Civil War and sought to unite various factions for a new government. Following accusations of responsibility for attacks on UN forces, he became a target of the US military. Aidid proclaimed himself president of Somalia in 1995 and was killed in Mogadishu on August 1, 1996.
