Mohammad Salim Al-Awa is an Egyptian Islamic thinker, author, and lawyer born on December 22, 1942, in Alexandria. He specializes in commercial law and has served as a legal advisor to several Arab governments. As the former Secretary-General of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, he is known for advocating dialogue rather than confrontation between the Islamic world and the West. Al-Awa also supports dialogue between Sunni and Shia Muslims and opposed the hereditary succession of rulership in Egypt. He ran as an independent candidate in the 2012 presidential elections.
