She is celebrated for her contributions to modern Sinhala poetry, having authored 23 books, including 19 poetry collections, three of which received the prestigious State Literary Award. Ruwanpathirana was recognized posthumously by the Sri Lankan government as Kala Keerthi. After completing her education at St. Thomas' Girls' High School and Sanghamitta Balika Vidyalaya, she earned her degree from the University of Colombo and worked in both governmental and NGO sectors.
