Morten Smelror is a Norwegian paleontologist born on May 12, 1958, in Trondheim. He obtained his cand. scient degree in 1985 and his dr. philos in 1992. He served as the director of the Norwegian Geological Survey (NGU) from 2006 to 2018. Smelror held various research and leadership positions at the Institute for Continental Shelf Research and Petroleum Technology in Trondheim from 1985 to 1997. Since 1997, he has been an under-director at the Institute of Natural History at NTNU and became a department director at NGU in 2000.
