Their bodies were discovered in Sumter County, South Carolina, on August 9, 1976, after having traveled across various locations in the U.S. They were murdered, with Freund shot three times in the chest and head, and Buckley in the chest and neck. Despite extensive efforts to identify them, they remained unidentified until January 19, 2021, and their murders remain unsolved.
