Mutsuko Watari, born on August 8, 1939, is a Japanese picture book and children's literature author from Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture. Her real name is Mutsuko Ikeda. After graduating from Tokyo Women's University with a degree in Japanese literature, she worked in children's book editing before turning to writing. After a two-year stay in Alaska, she debuted in 1971 with 'Seven Stars of Alaska'. She won the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award in 1980 for 'Hana Hana Minmi Monogatari' and again in 2011 for 'Mori no Otobukuro'.
