He obtained his medical degree from the University of California in 1933 and published numerous medical articles during his further training in San Francisco and St. Louis. In 1935, he began a research fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He became a fellow of the American College of Physicians at University College London in 1936 and returned to the USA a year later to work at a laboratory at Cedars of Lebanon in Los Angeles.
