Raised in Springfield, Illinois, he participated in sports and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954. Thunman commanded multiple submarines and held significant positions including Commander of Submarine Forces Pacific and Chief of Naval Education and Training. Post-retirement, he served as Superintendent at Valley Forge Military Academy and became president of CAE Electronics Corporation. He is also recognized in the Springfield High School and Sports Halls of Fame.
