Durán was crowned Rey Vallenato at the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in 1976 and has won two awards at the Festival Cuna de Acordeones de Villanueva, La Guajira. He is renowned for being a prolific composer of vallenato songs, recorded by various notable vallenato groups.
