Nancy Roos was a notable U.S. chess champion born in Berlin in 1905. Originally named Nanny Krotoschin, she was active in chess in Brussels before moving to the U.S. in 1939. She married Martin Roos in 1936. Roos secured the title of U.S. Women's Chess Champion in 1955 and finished as a runner-up in various tournaments. A professional photographer, she was recognized as the second highest rated woman in the U.S. Chess Federation before her death from breast cancer in 1957.
