She and her husband, Dr. Yrjö Kaunisto, amassed a significant art collection of 78 pieces, which she donated to the Ateneum in 2005. The collection included 35 works by Helene Schjerfbeck. Kaunisto completed her medical education in 1938 and published articles on blindness causes and corneal dystrophy. She married Yrjö in 1937 while studying medicine at the University of Helsinki.
