Notable for introducing voluntary export controls on automobiles to resolve U.S. trade disputes, Amaya later became a respected economic commentator. He held leadership positions at the Dentsu Institute for Human Studies and the Japan Economic Foundation. He passed away from lung cancer in Tokyo on August 30, 1994.
