Naresh Sohal was a British composer of Indian origin, born on 18 September 1939 and passed away on 30 April 2018. Known for his work in western classical music, he was the first to compose settings in Punjabi and Bengali. Sohal received the first annual bursary from the Arts Council of Great Britain and became the first Non Resident Indian awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian Government. His extensive compositions reflect his deep commitment to Hindu philosophy while maintaining a western musical idiom.
