He graduated in history from the University of Veliko Tarnovo in 1989 and earned his PhD in 1999. Torbov has authored 35 scientific publications and organized exhibitions of Thracian treasures. He excavated various sites, including ancient Variana and Thracian burial mounds across Bulgaria, and is known for his findings at the Vratsa Pass. He is married and has one daughter.
