Naushad Waheed, born on December 15, 1962, in Male, is a Maldivian cartoonist and painter. He was detained for four months by the government after publishing a cartoon in Hukuru magazine in 1999. Arrested in 2001 for participating in a critical debate against the government, he was tried for treason and sentenced to 15 years in prison, being released on February 22, 2006. He is a prominent political figure and the brother of former MP Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan, serving as the 5th President of Maldives from February 7, 2012, to November 17, 2013.
