Nawang Gombu was a Sherpa mountaineer born on May 1, 1936, in Minzu, Tibet. He became the world's first person to successfully summit Mount Everest twice. Gombu was the youngest Sherpa to reach the South Col at 26,000 feet in 1953 alongside Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. He also became the first Indian and third person in the world to conquer Nanda Devi in 1964. His record of two successful Everest summits was unbroken for nearly 20 years, with his first ascent occurring in 1963 and the second in 1965 as part of Indian expeditions.
