In 1959, she earned a master's degree in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Al-Malaika taught at universities in Baghdad, Basra, and Kuwait, and is often credited with writing the first free verse poetry in Arabic, with her poem 'The Cholera' being one of the earliest examples. She passed away on June 20, 2007, in Cairo.
