Chernev worked as an assistant director at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and the Vratsa Theatre. He was a production director at the Bulgarian Army Theater for nine years. He gained fame directing some of Bulgaria's most watched series, including 'Na vsyaki kilometr' (1969, 1971) and 'Kapitan Petko voivoda' (1981).
