Nélio José Nicolai (c. 1940 – 2017) was a Brazilian electrotechnician credited with inventing caller ID. Born in Belo Horizonte, he studied at the Escola Técnica de Minas Gerais before moving to Brasília in the 1970s to work for Telebrasília. In 1977, Nicolai developed Bina, a system designed to identify phone calls to deter prank callers, and filed a patent for it in 1980. Despite challenges, including job loss and lawsuits against telecom companies, he continued to advocate for his invention and secured financial settlements.
