Nelly Novaes Coelho was a Brazilian essayist and literary critic, born on May 17, 1922, in São Paulo. She initially aspired to be a pianist and studied at the São Paulo Conservatory of Dramatic and Musical Arts. Although she received a scholarship to study piano in Italy, she relinquished it due to World War II. She began her literary studies at the University of São Paulo in 1955, graduating in 1959. She taught Literary Theory from 1961 until 1972, later joining the University of São Paulo in 1981 as an adjunct professor and specializing in children's literature until her retirement in 1992.
