Nelson Ferreira de Castro Chaves was a Brazilian medical scientist born on June 8, 1906, in Água Preta and passed away on May 24, 1982, in Recife. He was a prominent researcher in childhood malnutrition in the Northeast region of Brazil. Chaves graduated in Medicine from the National Faculty of Medicine in Rio de Janeiro and became a professor at the Medical School of the University of Recife, focusing on Therapeutics and Physiology. He founded the Institute of Nutrition at the University and was its first director, in addition to being a founding member of the Pernambuco Academy of Medicine.
