Nena, born Gabriele Susanne Kerner on March 24, 1960, in Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany, is a German singer and actress. She gained fame in 1984 with her New German Wave hit '99 Luftballons', which was later re-recorded in English as '99 Red Balloons'. The name 'Nena' was also associated with the music group that released the hit. Her career experienced a resurgence in 2002 following the re-release of her earlier songs. In 2007, she co-founded the 'Neue Schule Hamburg' school.
