He served as the Diyawadana Nilame, the leading lay custodian of the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) from 1985 to 2005. Following this role, he became involved in politics with the United National Party, where he served as the Chief Organiser for the Galagedara Electorate in Kandy District and as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kandy Municipal Council.
