He was appointed by Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake to lead the Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in 1967, where he served as Chairman and Director-General. Jayaweera was instrumental in drafting the legislation for the CBC, ensuring it adhered to the principles of public service broadcasting. His leadership lasted three years, after which the CBC evolved into what is currently known as the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
