Newton C. Loken was an accomplished artistic gymnast and a coach specializing in gymnastics, trampolining, and cheerleading. A member of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, he became the NCAA all-around gymnastics champion in 1942 and won the Big Ten Championship in 1941 and 1942. He served as head coach for the University of Michigan gymnastics team from 1948 to 1983, leading them to two NCAA titles and twelve Big Ten championships, and achieving a record of 250-72-1. Additionally, he coached the Michigan trampolining team to NCAA titles in 1969 and 1970.
