He worked as a foreign correspondent for Newsweek in Vietnam and briefly in Beirut, before becoming the editorial chief in London, Houston, and Nairobi. After retiring in 1981, he focused on writing novels, including 'Gardens of Stone,' which was adapted into a film, and 'Embassy House,' concerning CIA operations in Vietnam.
