Nina Simone, born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933, was an influential American singer, songwriter, musician, and civil rights activist. Her music encompassed various genres including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Born into a poor family in Tryon, North Carolina, she aspired to be a pianist and studied at Juilliard. Although faced with racial discrimination, she launched her career in Atlantic City and released over 40 albums between 1958 and 1974. Simone was known for her emotive contralto voice and the integration of classical music influences in her work. She passed away on April 21, 2003.
