He belongs to the Kurmi caste and has served as Chief Minister from 2005 to 2014 and again in 2015-2017 before resigning. He returned to NDA and became Chief Minister for the seventh time in 2020. He is known for being the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar and is a prominent leader of the Janata Dal (United) political party.
