At the age of twenty, she began writing poems dedicated to renowned musicians including Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. McCarthy has also written lyrics for jazz standards and songs by artists like Antônio Carlos Jobim and Sonny Rollins. In 1994, she joined Lawrence Butch Morris's A Chorus of Poets and released her debut album red&blue in 1998. She has collaborated with various musicians and performed internationally, gaining recognition in both jazz and poetry circles.
