Norma Merrick Sklarek (April 15, 1926 - February 6, 2012) was the first African American woman to be licensed as an architect in New York (1954) and California (1962). She is renowned for designing the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan in 1976 and Terminal One at Los Angeles International Airport in 1984. Sklarek co-owned an architecture firm with Margaret Seagull and Katherine Diamond from 1985 to 1989. She was recognized as a key figure for women in a male-dominated field, promoting awareness of discrimination against women in certain professions.
