He studied Classical Studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and worked as a librarian from 1958 to 1965. Influenced by poets like Konstantinos Kavafis and T.S. Eliot, his works include the famous quote, 'They wanted to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds.' He was awarded the Great National Prize for Literature in 2011 but declined to accept it.
