Ntozake Shange (October 18, 1948 - October 27, 2018) was an American playwright and poet known for her work as a Black feminist activist. She addressed issues of race and Black empowerment in much of her writing. Her most famous work is the award-winning play for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf. Shange also authored novels such as Sassafras, Cypress, Indigo (1982), Liliane (1994), and Betsy Brown (1985). She received numerous accolades, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Shelley Memorial Award. She lived in Brooklyn, New York.
