Nursultan Nazarbayev, born on July 6, 1940, is the former president of Kazakhstan. He has been the country's leader since its independence from the Soviet Union in December 1991 and served initially as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR. Nazarbayev was re-elected for another five years in April 2011 and proposed changing Kazakhstan's name to 'Kazakh Eli' in February 2014. He resigned the presidency on March 20, 2019, and was succeeded by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The capital, Astana, was renamed Nur-Sultan in his honor.
